If you enjoy horror, this series has some seriously sinister stories in store for you.
Season 2 premiered on Thursday, July 21st, 2022, and audiences are already nostalgic about the show that started it all. The first episode, titled Dollhouse, features a character you may recognize. Denis O’Hare plays Spalding, and his appearance dates back to season 3 of the original series, Coven.
American Horror Stories is the third installment of the American Story franchise, created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. It is, however, a direct spin-off of the iconic American Horror Story.
Taking a trip down memory lane, who is Spalding in American Horror Story?
Who is Spalding in American Horror Story?
Spalding first appeared in American Horror Story: Coven in 2013 as a mute butler with a doll obsession.
His unwavering devotion to Fiona is arguably his defining characteristic (played by Jessica Lange).
He’s madly in love with her and even goes so far as to assist her in murdering the Supreme Court’s Anna Leigh Leighton (Christine Ebersole) and Emma Roberts’ Madison.
In a startling sequence, Myrtle (Frances Conroy) casts a spell on Spalding’s tongue in an attempt to get him to confess. He cements his loyalty by chopping it off because he is the only one who can speak the truth.
It doesn’t exactly work out because Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) ensures that the tongue can speak whether or not it’s attached to Spalding.
His own tongue betrays him, and Zoe murders him as a result once the truth is revealed.
Of the many things we learn from Coven, it’s that Spalding boasts quite the collection of unsettling dolls. That brings us neatly into the American Horror Stories era…
Spalding in American Horror Stories Dollhouse explained
Denis O’Hare reprises his role as Spalding in American Horror Stories season 2’s first episode, Dollhouse, but he is not the same character from Coven.
Spalding from Dollhouse is eventually revealed to be the father of Spalding from Coven.
Distractify reports in the 2022 episode that he is the boss of a doll factory in 1961. He kidnaps young women and forces them to compete for his ideal partner. Coby (Kristine Froseth), on the other hand, discovers a way for her and others to escape his clutches.
Notably, they’ve formed a bond with Spalding’s son, and Coby attempts to save him. She is then trapped, but she is rescued by witches who attend… Have you guessed what it is? Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Women, to be exact.
Coby and his son are welcomed into the academy by the witches, and we meet Myrtle when she was younger. Spalding’s son, as you may know, simply takes his father’s name and grows up to become the man we meet in Coven.
Denis O’Hare should be familiar
Outside of the American Horror Story franchise, you’ve probably seen the 60-year-old American actor.
He has appeared in films such as The Goldfinch (Lucius), Swallow (Erwin), and Dallas Buyers Club (Dr. Sevard).
Other TV credits include The Nevers (Dr. Edmund Hague), American Gods (Tyr), Big Little Lies (Ira Farber), This Is Us (Jessie), and True Blood’s vampire Russell Edgington.
